Ghost Ranch Youth Service Corps - 2010

Ghost Ranch, located twenty minutes North of La Puerta School, hosts a Youth Program every summer; the Youth Service Corps.  This summer we contacted Ghost Ranch and invited a couple groups to come to La Puerta to help us with some projects.  Back in June, two youth groups came to La Puerta School to help us build our chicken coop and to clean out the corral.  Our visitors came from upstate New York, Virginia and the D.C. area.  We are very grateful for the help the youth and adults provided.  We now have a chicken coop that we can start to use as soon as school begins.  Thank you again for all your hard work.  We hope you had fun!

SpEGGtacular! - Oct. 2010

After 4 weeks with us, our hens have started to lay some eggs!  This is very exciting for us all!  They are “teenager” eggs and a bit small, but from what we have been told, they will get bigger.

We will be working on making our chickens a warm and cozy home for the winter months—which are quickly approaching.  The children have learned a few things from our field experiences to KJ Farms and to Dexter’s coop that we can do to improve our coop.  We will keep those things in mind when designing our new space.
