What Makes La Puerta Unique? |
The philosophy of LPSASA is based on learner-centered theories and practices of education. This approach values individual learning styles and positive reinforcement while promoting understanding and creativity. With integrated curriculum design and commitment to fostering the whole-child; hands, heart and mind as its hallmarks, the School provides a valuable option for families in Northern New Mexico; Abiquiu, El Rito, Coyote, Gallina, Rio Chama, Ojo Caliente and other surrounding communities. |
The mission of La Puerta School for the Arts, Sciences and Agriculture (LPSASA) is to create a student-centered learning environment that empowers children to take risks, to lead their own learning, and to ignite their passion for life-long learning. La Puerta will provide an environment that will foster the differences among the value systems and learning styles of all and to actively seek out experiences that allow for exploration, inquiry and creative expression through hands-on student-centered projects. |
Learning at LPSASA is characterized by a process of collaboration and a sense of family. Students are part of multi-age learning groups. They participate in hands-on activities and cooperative projects that are not only focused in their own classrooms but also extend out to the world and, where appropriate, involve the greater community in which they live. Students consider the entire school as an extended family.
The collaborative spirit of the school is enhanced by the interdisciplinary nature of the curriculum which integrates the arts, sciences and agriculture into core learning areas. Creative, theme-based units combine elements of the performing and visual arts, sciences and agriculture for a well-rounded education that will support continued development of all students. |

The Vision of La Puerta School for the Arts, Sciences and Agriculture (LPSASA) is to provide students opportunities to reach their full potential through hands-on exploration and inquiry. Children will celebrate diversity by mimicking nature, culture and society through thoughtful artistic interpretation, scientific investigation and analysis, and by cultivating the land and caring for animals. La Puerta will provide and promote a caring, compassionate, nurturing environment where students will be responsible learners who will take initiative and risks in their daily lives. |
